250,000 Miles and a Lifetime of Memories

So this happened today…

My 2013 Toyota Highlander reached 250,000 miles!

A quarter of a million miles. When I look at that number, I can't help but think about everything that has happened in my life since I drove this car off the dealership lot back in 2013.

My son was just nine years old when I bought it. Nine! Today, he's 22, and it's almost impossible to comprehend how quickly those years have passed.

That Highlander has been there for so much of his growing up. The school drop-offs and pickups, scouting events, summers spent at the beach in Duxbury, road trips throughout New England, New Jersey, Canada, and countless trips to New York. And, of course, all those rides with friends and family, filled with conversations, laughter, and memories.

It's funny how a car becomes part of your family's history without your even realizing it.

There were also wonderful day trips with my dear friend Theresa. We'd head off for the day, enjoy the ride, talk, laugh, and make memories. Those trips are especially precious to me now, and I'm grateful for every one of them.

And then there's the real estate side of my life!

As a Realtor, my car has always been so much more than transportation. It's practically been a second office.

I've driven countless miles throughout the South Shore, Cape Cod, Boston, and beyond, showing properties, meeting buyers and sellers, attending inspections, checking on listings, and navigating roads I probably never would have discovered otherwise.

My Highlander has been my office on wheels more times than I can count. Between countless phone calls and all the time I've spent parked between appointments answering emails, looking up directions, joining meetings, eating lunch, or enjoying a cup of much-needed coffee, I've probably logged almost as many hours sitting still as I have driving! 😂

Over the years, I've spent thousands of hours behind that steering wheel. Some days were exciting, some were stressful, and some were just plain exhausting. But every mile was part of the journey.

Of course, 13 years and 250,000 miles don't come without a few battle scars! There have been a couple of minor fender-benders and plenty of scratches from bushes and trees I apparently thought I could park a little closer to than I should have. But those little imperfections are part of its history, too.

Through it all, my Highlander has been remarkably reliable. It's never been a fancy car, but it's been a very good one. More importantly, it's carried me and the people I love safely through all these years and all those miles.

When I took the picture of the odometer today, I noticed the smudging under the clear plastic cover. It's been there for years, and there's no way for me to clean it. I almost wished the picture looked a little nicer for such a milestone.

But then I thought, why should it?

After 250,000 miles and 13 years, a few imperfections are part of the story.

I suppose that's true of life, too.

Cars are just things, of course. But sometimes those things become part of the backdrop of our lives. They carry us to important places, through changing seasons, and alongside people we love.

I've always tried to take good care of this car, keeping up with its maintenance and giving it the attention it needed along the way. And in return, it has given me something invaluable: reliability, peace of mind, and the confidence that it would get me and my family safely where we needed to go.

I took care of it, and it took care of me.

And for that, I'm truly grateful.

So today, I'm celebrating my trusty 2013 Toyota Highlander. Not just for reaching 250,000 miles, but for all the places it's taken me, the people who've ridden alongside me, and the memories made along the way.

Here's hoping there are still a few more miles and adventures ahead!
